Elderly Woman Loses Fortune in Cryptocurrency Investment Scam

Updated: Aug 14

ree

Alice Lin, an 80-year-old woman, lost her life savings of $720,000 in a pig butchering scam that began on a Chinese-language chat app. The scammer, posing as a man connected to her healthcare, lured her into investing in cryptocurrency with promises of high returns.

Over time, she made six wire transfers, believing she was securing her financial future. The investments were fictitious, and her money was siphoned off by the scammers. This case is a cautionary tale of how quickly trust can be exploited in the digital age, especially with promises of financial gain. Anyone, regardless of age, can be targeted by such schemes.

Don’t become the next victim. Take our "Mastering Cyberscam Defense" course to learn how to identify and avoid these predatory scams.
