Midwestern Professional Falls Victim to Online Romance Scam

Updated: Aug 14

A 75-year-old professional from the Midwest fell victim to a cruel online romance scam, losing nearly $715,000 of his life savings. The scam began on LinkedIn, where he connected with a woman claiming to be a 37-year-old Chinese divorcee. Over time, she gained his trust and convinced him to invest in what she presented as lucrative opportunities.

Despite warnings from his bank and suspicious messages, he transferred large sums of money. When he tried to withdraw his investments, he faced demands for additional fees to "unfreeze" his account, revealing the scam. This story underscores how romance scams can target anyone, exploiting emotions and trust built over time. The victim’s anonymity reflects the shame many feel, but sharing these stories is crucial to prevent others from falling into the same trap.
